European Directive 2010/31 / EU on the energy efficiency of buildings sets a goal that no later than December 31 2020, all new private buildings have an almost null energy consumption. This ambitious goal that the European Union, as a whole, sets is particularly important for Spain for many reasons.
The main reason, given its great influence on the economy of our country, has to do with our high level of energy dependency, significantly higher than the European average. But then, construction is one of the most weight sector as far as overall energy consumption is concerned in Spain. Likewise, and due to the age of buildngs, construction becomes one of greatest potential sectors for savings.
It is also necessary to stand out that almost 58% of 25 million existing homes currently were built before the first legislation was passed by Spain in 1979 along with minimum energy efficiency criteria: The NBE CT79.
Therefore, the goal to achive an almost zero energy use homes should not be limited only to new-build homes but also to the existing ones.
Architectural technicians, as main responsible people for the design process and building projects nowadays and in the future, must take the challenge and make energy efficiency one of the main values of the buildings and architecture instead of focussing on the rehabilitation of building, so to speak.
